COURSE OVERVIEW - The progressive collapse of the AP Murrah Building, World Trade Center Towers and many others have underlined the need to design structures to resist progressive collapse. Recently, design codes including the International Building Code (2009 IBC) and other design codes over the world are being updated to include provisions on design of structures to resist progressive collapse. However, many design engineers may still be unaware of the importance of these requirements and may also be unaware of the new tools available to aid in satisfying this requirement. This course aims to provide basic background for practicing structural engineers regarding progressive collapse analysis as well as design methods and techniques.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS COURSE? - This workshop is particularly useful for structural engineers involved in:
COURSE OBJECTIVES - By the end of this workshop, attendees should be able to do the following:
- Understand the mechanisms of progressive collapse
- Understand the philosophies of design of structures to resist progressive collapse
- Understand the relevance of some seismic resistant code requirements for ensuring integrity and robustness
- Assess the need for progressive collapse analysis for a specific structure based on the relevant code requirements
- Apply some of the currently available simplified procedures for progressive collapse analysis
- Apply some of the available procedures for structural blast analysis
